SPP 2353: Daring More Intelligence – Design Assistants in Mechanics and Dynamics

DFG Priority Programme 2353

The German Research Foundation (DFG) has established the Priority Programme “Daring More Intelligence – Design Assistants in Mechanics and Dynamics” (SPP 2353), which is coordinated by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Prof. E.h. Peter Eberhard from the Institute of Engineering and Computational Mechanics at the University of Stuttgart. Two funding phases of three years each are planned. The joint work from all projects within SPP began in October 2022 with a kick-off meeting for the first phase. The second phase will start gently in October 2025.

The Priority Programme SPP 2353 “Daring More Intelligence” aim at the development of design assistance systems combining methods from optimisation, artificial intelligence, and dynamics/mechanics to assist in and partially automate the interdisciplinary design of engineering systems. This may not only result in designs that are actually optimal with respect to formalized criteria, but such design assistants may equip design engineers with an artificial intuition supplementing their own specialized expertise. The members of the priority program gather regularly at annual meetings and doctoral student colloquia to share updates on the progress of their sub-projects. To foster interdisciplinary collaboration, two working groups have been established, focusing on “Application of AI Methods” and “Design Processes in Dynamics.” These working groups meet consistently, leading to numerous collaborative efforts and joint publications. Furthermore, the latest findings from each project are regularly presented at the GAMM annual meetings, ensuring ongoing knowledge exchange and visibility within the research community.

The call for proposals has been published on 24 June 2021 and can be downloaded here. Proposals for the second three-year funding period are invited, click here for more information.

Questions related to the scientific objectives and the strategic intentions of the Priority Programme, also concerning the scientific requirements for funding, should be addressed to the coordinator of the Priority Programme, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Prof. E.h. Peter Eberhard.
